This plant sends up its inflorescence in December/January, and the first dark violet and white flowers appear in July/August. The flower spike remains colorful for 9 to 10 months.

This is the batch in our sales catalog. The plants are just starting to form offsets, so should flower in 2 years (ie., 2002)

General notes

Grows from southern Mexico to Panama in cool, shady moist areas. The plant forms large numbers of offsets before it flowers (see the photo AB54 clump above) but we have found that if you succumb to temptation and start taking the offsets off before it flowers, the plant will not flower.

This plant is unlike the "air plants" in that it absorbs carbon dioxide during the day, like "normal"  plants. So you can treat it like a conventional bromeliad and use the same culture as for vrieseas.
