Hygrophorus ponderatus  Britzelm.  *All collections Jackson State Forest, California

This large white Hygrophorus can easily be mistaken for Hygrophorus sordidus Peck, but has an arachnoid annular zone from the veil remnants and larger spores. All my collections are from the Jackson State Forest, near Mendocino. David Largent described this species from Jackson State Forest too and apparently this is the only collection area so far known within Califonria.  Otherwise this species appears to be widely distributed in North America, as pictorial reports have emerged from Montana and Eastern Canada. Hessler and Smith report it from Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama.
