Shrub; leaves alternate, simple, ovate, base cordate, margin toothed, apex acute; palmately veined, pubescent; flowers axillary, green; calyx hood-like; stamens and gynophore long-exserted; fruit a woody capsule, spirally twisted at the base.

Standley (1930) describes the flowers as red, a condition not observed at Kaxil Kiuic. Local tradition indicates that fruits placed in the mouths of toddlers slow to talk will induce language skills.
