Gavin Henson is set to miss Wales' Rugby World Cup campaign after undergoing surgery on a dislocated bone in his right wrist.

The 29-year-old centre was forced off after half-an-hour of Wales' 19-9 warm-up victory over England on Saturday due to the injury and now faces a recovery period of six to eight weeks.

Wales kick-off their tournament against South Africa in Wellington on September 11, with coach Warren Gatland set to name his 30-man squad on August 22.

Henson will not be available for selection in the initial squad, but could come into consideration if further injuries arise during the tournament.

"Gavin underwent surgery this morning [Sunday] at the Vale hospital, to correct the dislocation to a bone in his right wrist," Wales' national medical performance manager Prav Mathema said.

"He has been given a return to play time of six to eight weeks which, while ruling him out of selection for the initial squad, could see him available to the coaches while we are still in the Pool stages of the tournament.

"With that fact in mind Gavin will remain under the care of the Wales national squad medical staff in order to ensure that he returns to fitness at the earliest opportunity in case the coaches need to call him out to New Zealand for any reason."

Fly-half Rhys Priestland, another injury victim from Saturday's win, will be assessed on Monday after complaining of a thigh problem. The Scarlets playmaker will be joined by Ryan Jones, Stephen Jones and Gethin Jenkins, who all have calf issues.

In positive news for Wales, both Lee Byrne and Leigh Halfpenny have been passed fit prior to next weekend's meeting with Argentina in Cardiff.
