Nazi gold: Pressure builds on Swiss

This bar made from stolen gold clearly shows Nazi insignia

Switzerland is coming under renewed pressure to increase its compensation payments to Holocaust survivors.

BBC Diplomatic Correspondent James Robbins reports
A UK government report on gold plundered by the Nazis during World War Two is unlikely to make specific demands but the chairman of an international conference is expected to demand further action.

The conference, organised by the UK Foreign Office, took place in London last December.

It was attended by a number of interested parties, mainly Jewish groups.

The 800 page report of its findings is being published days after Switzerland's central bank refused to add to the £40m it has already paid into a compensation fund.

The massive document brings together information kept secret for half a century, and shows how gold bullion was stolen from countries the Nazis conquered.

Jewellery and even dental gold was also taken from the Nazi's victims, including Jews killed in the holocaust.

Several specific funds have been set up but Switzerland, which played the pivotal role in trading the gold, is still fighting a number of legal actions with Jewish groups.

Last Friday the country's central bankers refused to contribute to a £770m settlement being paid by the two main Swiss banks Credit Suisse and UBS.

The national bank says further payments would not be in the country's interest.

The UK's report is not expected to make special demands for payments, although conference chairman Lord Mackay says further action is needed to help the dwindling numbers of survivors of Nazi persecution.
