Arisaema thunbergii ssp. urashima is a perennial herb
inhabiting forest floors in coastal areas or near human settlements,
with single compound leaves. Corms form many bulblets underground,
which generally results in colonies. Leaves, singles, are radical,
emerging from the bases of the plants, comprising 11-17 leaflets,
called pedate compound leaves. Petioles measure 40-50cm in height
and look like stems. From the bases, flower stalks arise, and the
tops set spadixes with flowers enveloped with spathes below the
leaves. The flowers are dioecious; young strains put male flowers,
and complete ones give females. Appendages, black-purple, measure
60cm in length. Bloom time: April-May. |
