Collection  : The drug is collected in summer or autumn, removed from fibrous root, wash clean and dried or slice while fresh and dried.

Description  : Sub-cylindrical, slightly flattened or irregularly slat-shape and lump-shape with knob-like outgrowths and short branches. 5 - 22 cm long, 2 - 5 cm in diameter. Externally yellowish brown or greyish brown, uneven with stiff remains of fibrous roots and the tops of branches possessing rounded bud scars. Some outer bark irregularly fissured and exhibiting remains of scales. Texture hard. Slices oblong or irregular shape, 1 - 5 mm thick, edge irregular, transverse cut surface whitish to pale red brown, starchy, dotted vascular bundles and numerous small light, spots visible. Texture slightly tough, dusting on breaking, viscous and slippery when moistened. Odorless, taste slightly sweet and astringent.

Identification  : Powder: Pale brown, starch granules abundant, simple granules subspherical, polygonal or sub-square. 8 - 48 µm in diameter, hilum cleft, stellate, Y shape or pointed. Striations visible in large granules, compound granules consisting of 2 - 4 components. Raphides of calcium oxalate occuring in mucilage cells or scattered throughout, needle crystal 40 - 144 µm long, about 5 µm in diameter, stone cells sub-elliptical, sub-square or triangular, 25 - 128 µm in diameter with fine and close pit canals. Deep brown stone cells elongated, about 50 µm in diameter, walls heavily thickened on the three sides and thin on one side. Border pitted vessels and tracheids more frequent, most bordered pits elongated to scalariform.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, soak the drug in water, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry.

Action  : To remove damp, to counteract toxicity, and to improve the lobility of joints.

Indication  : dysuria with turbid discharge, leukorrhea, carbuncle, lymphadenitis, chronic eczema, contracture of limbs and muscle pain in syphilis with mercury poisoning

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 15 to 60 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place.
