  Description: Annuals. Culms 45-85 cm long, decumbent to erect, rooting at lower nodes, violet; nodes glabrous. Leaves 2.5-6 x 0.3 - 0.7 cm, elliptic or elliptic-lanceolate, base rounded, apex acuminate; sheaths to 3 cm long; ligules membranous, truncate. Inflorecence of subumbellate fascicle or racemes, subtended by a spathe, to 20 cm long. Sessile spikelets 2 in a raceme, 3-4 mm long, oblong, awned; lower glume 3-4 x 1 mm, elliptic-loblong, subcoriaceous; upper glume 3-4 mm long, elliptic-lanceolate; lower floret absent; upper floret bisexual; second lemma 2-3 mm long, oblanceolate; awn 1.5-2.5 cm long; stamens 3. Pedicelled spikelets 3 in a raceme, 4-6 mm long, elliptic-lanceolate; lower glume 4-6 mm long, elliptic-lanceolate; lower glume 4-6 mm long, elliptic-lanceolate; upper glume 4-5 mm long, elliptic; upper floret male; stamens 3.
