Found in Mali, Senegal, Benin, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Zaire, Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe in woodlands and thickets at elevations of 1000 to 1600 meters as a small to large sized, cool growing terrestrial with ellipsoid to ovoid tubers giving rise to a leafy stem carrying 6 to 15, lowermost 1 to 2, reduced to funnel-shaped sheathing, the middle spreading ovate, acute the upper grading into bract-like leaves that blooms in the late spring and summer on an erect, 2.4 to 12" [6 to 30 cm] long, fairly laxly, 3 to 15 flowered inflorescence.
