Common Name The Papillose Petaled Lepanthes

Flower Size .08" [2 mm]

Found in Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador in high evergreen montane forests at elevations around 700 to 1650 meters as a miniature sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with erect ramicauls enveloped by 4, brown, ciliate lepanthiform sheaths with dilated, densely ciliate-scabrous, mucronate ostia and carrying broadly elliptic to elliptic, obtuse to subacute, coriaceous, fleshy, consicuously tridenticulate apically, the central tooth is very conspicuous, dark green above, spotted purple beneath, gradually narrowing below into the shortly petiolate base leaf that blooms in the later summer on to 4, only one in flower at a time, always shorter than the leaf, .28" [7 mm] long, congested, successively single to 13 flowered inflorescence.

"This dwarf species is at once distinguished from all its allies, except L. parvula, by the papillate hairs of its petals. Various species, such as the Lepanthes Lindleyana complex and L. rekoi have ciliate petals, but papillate petals are not common in the genus. In habit, this species resembles Lepanthes avis, but the lateral lobes of the lip in the latter species are divergent rather than closely enclasping the column as in the former. Lepanthes papillipetala is closely related to L. parvula but is distinguished by its entire sepal-margins, its hispidulose lip and its larger flowers." Dressler 1959
