In 1952 during the Mau Mau Uprising, the poisonous latex of the plant was used to kill cattle in incidents of biological warfare. Synadenium grantii (also known as S. compactum) is commonly cultivated both as a hedge and as a traditional grave marker by various ethnic groups in central Kenya, including the Agikuyu and Akamba.
