Another classic RPG series is getting the remake treatment on the Nintendo DS, as Atlus has announced Legacy of Ys: Books I & II. The compilation will feature the first two games in the series—in the same way the TurboGrafx version did in 1990, also available on Virtual Console—but will be updating them for the new hardware.

The game will feature a full 3D visual overhaul, as well as a remixed version of the rocking Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack. It will also feature some DS specific elements, including optional touch screen controls and some sort of local wireless multiplayer component for up to four players. Check out the teaser trailer here.

The first Ys game was originally released in 1987, followed by the sequel a year later. The games are best known for their epic storyline and fantastic soundtrack. They also feature a unique real-time combat mechanic, in which players inflict damage on enemies by simply walking into them.

It's great to see somewhat overlooked titles like Ys I & II being updated, as it allows a whole new audience of gamers to enjoy these classics. The game will be hitting the DS on February 10, 2009.
