PLANT OF THE MONTH

September 2023–Eutrochium dubium ‘Little Joe’

Latin Name:  Eutrochium dubium ‘Little Joe’ (syn Eupatorium dubium ‘Little Joe’)

Common Name:  Little Joe Pye Weed

Family:  Asteraceae

Type:  Herbaceous perennial

Origin:  Eastern United States

Location at Bloedel Reserve:  Arrival Garden

Garden Uses:  Borders, rain gardens, and meadows

Fun Fact:  This cultivar of Eutrochium dubium is a smaller more upright version of the Joe Pye weed you might be familiar with. This plant is a heavy lifter when it comes to attracting pollinators, with it’s pale pink to dark purple blooms in late summer. The genus name is from the Greek words eu meaning well and troche meaning wheel-like in reference to the plant’s whorled leaves.
