PlayStation’s first Remote Play dedicated device, PlayStation Portal remote player, to launch starting Nov 15 at $199.99

Since launching PS5, we’ve been amazed to see how players around the world have embraced the generational leaps we made in the gaming experience, such as the heightened feeling of immersion delivered by the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in the DualSense wireless controller. Our PlayStation community continues to give us a reason to challenge ourselves to bring new innovations to the market for all players to enjoy. That’s why today, we are especially pleased to share new updates about our upcoming hardware products.

In May, we gave a quick peek at our dedicated PS5 remote play device – now called PlayStation Portal remote player, and our first wireless earbuds, called Pulse Explore. Today we’re pleased to share more details about these products and reveal a new PlayStation over-the-ear wireless headset, Pulse Elite. Both Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore deliver low latency lossless audio from PS5 and PlayStation Portal using our new PlayStation Link wireless technology.

Here are the details.

PlayStation Portal remote player

PlayStation Portal remote player brings the PS5 experience to the palm of your hand. It includes the key features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback*. The vibrant 8-inch LCD screen is capable of 1080p resolution at 60fps, providing a high definition visual experience that’s expected from the high quality games created by world-class developers.

PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house. PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi**, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal. PlayStation Portal can play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and use the Dualsense controller. It also includes a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio. PS VR2 games, which require the headset, and games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming, are not supported.***

PlayStation Portal remote player will launch later this year for 199.99 USD | 219.99 EURO | 199.99 GBP | 29,980 YEN. We’ll have more details soon on when pre-orders begin for PlayStation Portal.

Pulse Elite wireless headset & Pulse Explore wireless earbuds

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore are the latest PlayStation wireless headset and earbuds, bringing next level audio performance to the gaming experience.

  • Pulse Elite is our new wireless headset that offers lossless audio and includes a retractable boom mic with AI-enhanced noise rejection capable of filtering background sounds. A charging hanger is also included with the product for a convenient charging and storage option.
  • Pulse Explore is our first set of wireless earbuds, providing a premium portable audio experience that includes dual microphones with AI-enhanced noise rejection capable of filtering background sounds. It also offers lossless audio and comes with a charging case.

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore will be the first PlayStation audio devices to use custom-designed  planar magnetic drivers for an audiophile-level listening experience normally found in premium headphones for professional sound engineers. With Pulse Explore, we’re pleased to be one of the first companies to provide wireless earbuds to the mass consumer market using planar magnetic driver technology.

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore are part of our ongoing efforts to amplify the audio experience in gaming and make the gameplay experience more immersive through enhanced sound. Pulse Elite will be available for 149.99 USD | 149.99 EURO | 129.99 GBP | 18,980 YEN and Pulse Explore will be available for 199.99 USD | 219.99 EURO | 199.99 GBP | 29,980 YEN. We’ll have more details to share soon, including when pre-orders begin and launch dates.

PlayStation Link, PlayStation’s new wireless audio technology

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore connect directly with PlayStation Portal by leveraging this new wireless audio technology, PlayStation Link. This innovation delivers low latency, lossless audio and easy switching between multiple PlayStation Link hosts such as PS5 with the USB adapter and PlayStation Portal.

When using Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore with PS5, the USB adapter that’s included with each headset and earbuds is required for PlayStation Link. The PlayStation Link USB adapter will also be sold separately as a standalone item, and can be used on PC and Mac, so players can connect Pulse Elite or Pulse Explore to experience the same lossless and low latency audio.

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore can simultaneously connect to a PlayStation Link supported device (PS5, PC, Mac, or PlayStation Portal) and a Bluetooth supported device. For example, Pulse Explore can be connected to PS5 (via the USB adapter) using PlayStation Link and also to a mobile phone through Bluetooth at the same time. While playing on PS5, gamers can instantly answer a call and hear it through the same Pulse Explore earbuds.

We can’t wait to launch our new line of products for PS5, so players can play longer and  experience its heightened immersiveness. We want to thank all our fans for being part of the PlayStation family and for embracing PS5, and we look forward to continuing to come up with new ways to enhance the player experience.

*Haptic feedback and adaptive trigger features are only available when those features are supported by the game being played.

**Requires broadband internet Wi-Fi with at least 5Mbps for use. For a better play experience, a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended.

***Games that require a VR headset (PlayStation VR or PlayStation VR2) or additional peripherals (other than a DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense, or DualSense Edge wireless controller) are not compatible. Games that must be streamed on PS5 using a PS Plus Premium membership are not compatible.

  • I don’t think people understand this device completely. You don’t have to be in the same house as your playstation to use it. You just need some decent wifi and you can use it where ever. I’ll be spending more time at my boyfriends place and now I don’t have to lug my ps around. I can just connect to the wifi and play my games,in the bed, while he watches his shows. I’m thinking about buying the portal and the buds. Sounds good to me.

    • You DO have to be in the same house, and even then, if it’s anything like other Remote Play, it doesn’t work very well.

    • If they add this function which we already do have in remote play AND we could access the PC streaming service which we already pay this would be a no brainer for many. As is it does have its uses but limited.

    • @Icy_Auron no you do not, this device will work the same as the Remote Play app already does on your phone or tablet, but with improvements.

  • I think it’s great. I have the backbone, and though it’s great, it’s not a ps handheld. I look forward to this playstation purchase. Playstation keep doing what you’re doing keep us die hard posit fans updated on your next big thing. Thank you for completing my gaming life.

  • I’d like a definitive release date and a date to pre-order if you will. Thank you in advance

  • I can see myself using this. Hopefully the firmware will allow messaging and party chat in the future as well. Thanks for this awesome device.

  • The portal is such a weird device. For the price of a Nintendo Switch Lite, you get a device that can’t run anything natively. Such a strange decision. Especially when a portable PlayStation could really have new life in a post-switch world

    • Fair point, but if I want to play my Switch games, I would buy a Switch. I want to play GoWR in handheld mode without a SteamDeck or AsROGG… I already own a PS5… I can’t understand this (non)-comparison…

    • Trying to support a handheld and VR with their own games would stretch them too thin. It is an odd device though. Basically your phone

  • As someone who has actually play games using remote play on my Samsung and iOS device, this is definitely for me! Looking forward to it. I was planning to get a Backbone but thought against it as my mobile phone is NOT a gaming device (besides from Chess.com). Latency will improve over time, and the lower end of the device specs keeps the price relatively down. The only con here – besides from the overpriced accessories marketplace – is that the PS Portable can just be used as a “Second Screen” and or second controller. “. What would be a game changer would be if you could allow two household user play, meaning allow a different profile to access remote gameplay while still allowing native non-game (media apps) use for the device itself. My wife could Netflix on the living room while I game in my den! Wishful thinking…

  • Did not expect the buds to be more than the headset. When are we going to see what the tempest engine is all about and get ACTUAL 3D audio?

  • I suppose you cant have person A playing on the PS5 on TV and simultaneously have person B stream with another psn account from that PS5 to the PS Portal?

  • I’m struggling to understand if PSPortal supports remote play from a different network or not.

All official materials only mention “same household”.

    Am I missing something?

    • No, it’s definitely advertised as for use in the same house. Even if I’m wrong about that, that only makes it worse. Remote Play already barely works even on the same network, I can’t even imagine how laggy and unstable it’d be across the wider internet.

  • I have tried many streaming devices this year. I am very willing to purchase this device.Perhaps you all think this device is not worth it, but if it allows me to play PS5 at home or even in bed, that would be the most enjoyable thing.

  • Please bring back the PSP

  • I’m still rockin’ my OG OLED Vita. Games still look pulchritudinous on it.

  • Sorry, but streaming flat out doesn’t work. Remote Play has existed for quite awhile, and it simply isn’t an option for most games. This is certainly a step in the right direction, albeit an expensive and incomplete one. I don’t understand why there’s such a push to try and get people off of their PS5s. If you’re going to play off of a TV, it has to function like Switch, period (I have no love for Nintendo, that’s just a fact).

  • The PS portal sounds like an interesting product. It however appears to be too limited for no reason as it specifically cannot use the PS plus streaming service. Lack of this just makes it a dual sense with a screen when it could be much more!

  • Really Interesting. Glad that Sony is investing in Remote Play, just like the PS4.

  • Considering that this is considered to be an ACCESSORY to the PS5, much like the DualSense edge controller(which I think is overpriced), I don’t think it’s a bad move. I understand the complaints about this device, I too have a Backbone and I rarely use it because the connection is never the best, but if this device is using integrated non-Bluetooth technology and plays PS5 games where you last played/saved and continues to save your data to your console, (assuming the connection is uninterrupted), a product like this would be great for people who have kids or just want to play games in another location without having to sacrifice being tied down to a huge console or a desk in a separate room.

I would love to have a PSP type set up but, to still be connected and not have to download or reinstall games, I think it’s a plus, despite all the haters in the comments.

  • Seems like Sony really need to fix their in house communication. This device bit working with the PS5’s headset is a major oversight.

Forcing people to buy a newer version of something they already own just to get headphone audio is diabolical.

Still waiting to hear if this has better lag over the remote play app. Currently the input lag via remote play makes most games unplayable via remote play.

  • Nice to see you haven’t changed from the Vita days.
I’d never pay 200$ for just a remote play machine. That’s just crazy 🙄

  • I feel there is a missed opportunity with the portal. Parents would most likely buy the portal (if it was stand alone for their kids) instead of the switch, but having a handheld that can only be used instead of PS5 may not be worth it for families.

  • Definitely not buying!

  • $199.99
I DON’T MIND GETTING 2 FOR THE CRIB… I GET IT WE IN A HIGH TECH SOCIETY… TALKING BOUT THEY WANT A NATIVE HANDHELD SYEAM DECK LIKE DEVICE SMH THAT WILL NOT BE AS GOOD AS PS5 GRAPHICS AND STEAM DECK LIKE $600 FOR TRASH GAMES

  • I really can’t wait. It’ll be a day one buy for me. The backbone is too expensive for what it is so I haven’t bought it but I have a little plastic adapter where I can use my phone mounted on top of a regular dualsense controller. The experience sucks. It’s way too heavy and cumbersome. This screen will be bigger, it will leave my phone available in case I need it, and it is lightweight. I’m sorry there are some of you that don’t want it. There’s good news though: you don’t have to buy it! I will and so will many others.

Yes I would have paid more for a new psp/vita but I would rather get this than nothing.

  • Dear, PlayStation.

Could you clarify if PlayStation Link only works with audio or if also work to improve the connection between PS5 and PS Portal like CNET video suggests?

  • Actually, can’t wait for this. We are by choice, a one TV household. Sometime my wife bogarts the TV for the evening with some bad television (Say Yes To Dress), so to be actually in the house, and able to play a game. would be great. Don’t need a take it with me portable. Had a PSP and a Vita, never actually played it even though took it with me everywhere. So this is a pre-order for me.

  • Useless and expensive.Ill pass

  • Okay, i’m sold! Where do i sign-up!

  • I can’t wait for the whole bundle!

  • If this eliminates the need to reconnect my phone to my PlayStation EVERY SINGLE TIME I leave the app I’m all in. My wife wants me to spend more time outside anyway so this is perfect.

  • This is a verry disappointing product reveal everything is either way to expensivce or is way to expensive and is a anemic product playstation portal. I wanted the earbuds but $200 thats way to much. sony you drop the ball now fix it.

  • I own a steam deck and a ps5 and I love to take the steam deck anywhere in the house now think about it you can take you ps5 anywhere in your house im not taking my steam deck outside my home cmon!!so please take my 200 and give me one NOW!!!

  • I bought the new Edge controller and am now firmly a paddle user. If this doesn’t have paddles, there’s a 0% chance I’m buying.

  • Gotta be honest SONY. I really think you screwed this one up. Though I love the design, In this day in age- I should be able to take my portal anywhere I want without having to REMOTE PLAY & needing my console to be ON. Imagine the lag between your handheld device & your portal due to severe lag, interference or whatever. In essense- this should be a portable PS5 in the palm of your hand shrunk in size & movable from one location to the next without syncing into your current home device. That’s just me though.

  • Gotta be honest SONY. I really think you screwed this one up. Though I love the design, In this day in age- I should be able to take my portal anywhere I want without having to REMOTE PLAY & needing my console to be “ON”. Imagine the lag between your handheld device & your portal due to severe lag, interference or whatever. • What the new handheld ps5 portal does it require the ps5 console to be on to use the portable features? or will it work as long as it’s on the same wifi connections?

  • Does it work on ps4?

  • I don’t feel like this portal device was necessary.

So it’s got a lot of things working against it imo.

Subpar screen. Supbar resolution, subpar battery life. No Bluetooth support, no local/portable library. No cloud access. Requires a ps5 on the same network.
plus that has to be powered on as well.

Like.. Everyone keeps citing this specific example of using it if your family needs/wants to use your main TV. First of all stop neglecting your time with them. But I guarantee any tv at $200 or less will provide a better experience than a 8″ screen. Hell I got a 43″ 4k for that much last black friday.

Like remote play doesn’t even support opening apps like YouTube or Netflix and it has no native apps so it feels so lackluster even for basic examples of why someone would want a portable device to begin with. YouTubers are going to crucify this device.

  • Too bad it isn’t a true successor to the Vita. I would’ve bought that.

  • So this is the new “PSP” huh

  • I love it buy i want know the day is coming

  • Question: I noticed that you don’t HAVE to use the home WiFi that the PS is connected to in order to use it and as long as it’s connected to appropriate WiFi it’ll work. But how far does that go? Could you use it overseas, or does it need to be connected to the same National server?

  • So, just to be clear as I may have missed the point. Is Potal compatible with other headset/earpods rather than just these new products through PlayStation Link?

  • Can’t wait! When is the pre-orders? This is official! I’m getting the ear plugs also.

  • Only question is can I take this to a friends house and play this while there? If not yeah this thing is pretty pointless to me. Cant even download any games to the system

  • What happens when it gets stick drift?

  • I’m aftaid the lack of replaceable controller attachments is a dealbreaker for me for the Portal, but those earbuds will be perfect for PSVR2! 👍

  • Idk about anyone else or really care to know about anyone’s opinion opposing of this remote play but I PERSONALLY am truly looking forward to it. I need the pre-order date ASAP! I’ve already mentally purchased it just need to physically pay for it lmao

  • I wish the headset looked more like traditional headphones. That design is uuuuuuuugggly! I’m very interested in the sound, but I’d honestly be kind of embarrassed to wear that headset.

  • Will any of this come in black? I definitely want the Pulse Elite Headset and Portal but in black. I’m still waiting for the charge station to come in black, too.

  • I’m really looking forward to the PSPortal for a lot of reasons. My girlfriend prefers to play handhelds and this would be easier for her to get into PS5 games. Also while I like the backbone, having a larger screen and all the DualSense features are going to make remote play way more enjoyable. Also please have an official case on PlayStation Direct!

  • Where can I buy the PlayStation portal at it looks sick
