La plante a été découverte par le révérend Benjamin Couch Henry (1850-1901) le 8 octobre 1881 à l’ombre des rochers près du village de Sam-tin. Originaire de Sharpsburg en Pennsylvanie, Benjamin Henry a étudié à l’Université de Princeton et au Séminaire. Il arriva à Canton en 1873 avec le Conseil des Missions Presbytérien Américain et resta en Chine jusqu’en 1894, où il fut l’un des fondateurs de l’Université Lingnan. Lui et sa femme, Augustine Henry (857-1930) ont collecté de nombreuses plantes pour Henry Hance.

L’espèce a été décrite et dénommée en 1883 par Henry Fletcher Hance (1827-1886) dans le Journal of Botany, British and Foreign volume 21, numéro 7, page: 202. L’épithète spécifique leprosa signifie lépreuse, squameuse.
L’espèce fait partie de la section Leprosae.
Synonyme : Begonia bretschneideriana Hemsl.

Herbe rhizomateuse rampante, feuilles peltées, obovales ou ovales, asymétriques, d’une vingtaine de centimètres, glabres. Inflorescences de fleurs blanc rose de mai à septembre.

Plante des enrochements calcaires, qui se trouve communément dans la région de Guangdong, dans le Guangxi, entre 100 et 800 mères d’altitude.
Plante des broussailles, qui aime la chaleur et un sol frais mais très drainé. Culture délicate.
Multiplication par division des touffes, semis ou boutures des rhizomes.

 

The plant was discovered by Reverend Benjamin Couch Henry (1850-1901) on October 8, 1881 in the shade of the rocks near the village of Sam-tin. A native of Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, Benjamin Henry studied at Princeton University and Seminary. He arrived in Canton in 1873 with the American Presbyterian Missionary Council and remained in China until 1894, where he was one of the founders of Lingnan University. He and his wife, Augustine Henry (857-1930) collected many plants for Henry Hance.
The species was described and named in 1883 by Henry Fletcher Hance (1827-1886) in the British Journal of Botany, Volume 21, Number 7, page: 202. The specific epithet leprosa means leprous, flaky.
