Description
Tavl. 503. A. Cystopteris fragilis , fig.
English: Two low-growing ferns, which in dense tufts inhabit rock and wall cracks. By their indusium they differ from Dryopteris. In Cystopteris this is thin, soon falling off, to the shape ovate and attached with its base, fig. the former (A) is preferably a shade plant of a thin and fragile nature, yet very widespread (eg between the high mountains of Asia, such as the Altai) and one of the ferns which go furthest to the north; it is also found in the polar countries (Spitsbergen, Novaya Semlya). The other (B) is also commonly seen on open, sun- and wind-exposed boulders and rock walls and is also known from Siberia and the northern United States. Both have round track stains. Page 503.
