Summary[edit]

Description
English: Fungal parasite on lichen Several species of lichen (e.g., those in the genus Parmelia) are found with patches that have turned pink. These are areas where the lichen has been attacked by a parasitic fungus (in this case, by Marchandiomyces corallinus).

In this photo, infection seems to be well advanced: the lichen, which would earlier have been pink in the affected areas, now has a bleached appearance. Some small pink blobs are visible on the surface of the lichen; these are the sclerotia of the invading fungus (a sclerotium is a mass of fungal tissue that "is a survival or perennating body", i.e., it allows the fungus to sit out unfavourable conditions).

For further information on this species, see Alan Silverside's lichen pages: http://www.lichens.lastdragon.org/lichenicolous/Marchandiomyces_corallinus.html
