These pics were taken while returning frm Jungle near Betul, MP. It was pitch black and smone told me that there z a shikakai plant in front. I couldnt see bt I clicked anyway…and voila….. I got these !

It could be Acacia caesia. Please verify.

I feel it is Acacia sinuata because of the following sir-
1) One gland on the petiole (please see attached photo).
2) Leaflets less than 30 pairs and petiole gland globular (I count 21 pairs in the attached photo).
3) Also, gland between upper most pair of pinnae, calyx red.
Please validate sir. Thank you.

Its okay but please look at the following character: whether midvein of leaflets starting from centre or from margin. If starting centrally then it is A. caesia or else if starting marginally then it leads on to A. sinuata (the Shikakai plant).

The last three images are so good. We can say from these images that the midvein of leaflets are starting from the margin at base. Hence you are right in thinking it to be Acacia sinuata.

Acacia sinuata (Lour.) Merr., shikakai,
wild woody climber from Balghat area of Tamilnadu and Karnataka;

We have Acacia concinna (pl. click) as shikakai in efloraofindia site.

ILDIS gives both Acacia sinuata (Lour.) Merr. (with no separate distribution in Indian states & only one reference) & Acacia concinna (Willd.) DC. (with wide distribution in Indian states & numerous references) as accepted names.

In view I feel it should be Acacia concinna. Pl. clarify if otherwise.

Acacia sinuata is conspecific with A. concinna.

The correct nomenclature will be as follows:

In case A. concinna and A. sinuata are considered to be distinct species, the distinguishing features are to be elucidated.

I still remember that this was a tree and not a climber.
The crucial character is the midvein of leaflets. If the midvein starts from the margin at base then it is Senegalia pennata or if it starts centrally of subcentrally, then Senegalia caesia (here Acacia torta is a synonym). I find that in the field note it is mentioned that the midvein is starting centrally or subcentrally and therefore the decision goes in favour of Senegalia caesia.

If the plant is a straggling shrub it could be Acacia torta (Syn: Mimosa torta, Acacia intsia, Acacia caesia.)

I have now consulted the authentic literature.
Acacia torta is a synonym of A. caesia.
A. intsia is a nomen confusum.
A. caesia is now called Senegalia caesia. It is predominantly a straggler or climber or a scandent shrub but occasionally a small tree as per the literature consulted by me.

To me these appear close to images at Senegalia pennata (L.) Maslin rather than those at Senegalia caesia (L.) Maslin et al.

Looks like Acacia sinuata (Lour.) Merr.

I am unable to comment here without seeing close-up of the leaflets.

Agreed …, the flowering was profuse over the tree tops; could only manage to get photos of fallen and dried flower-heads. I checked through all Acacia spp. listed at Herbarium JCB, and found Acacia sinuata (Lour.) Merr. as the candidate ID based on reference material there.
