A medium-sized tree with an open airy form, Parkinsonia aculeata makes for a notable garden accent with its green bark and spectacular flower display. Its pendulous compound foliage gives it a somewhat shaggy appearance and during the hot summer months its foliage drops off to reveal its sculptural form. In spring it blooms with showy sprays of golden yellow flowers with spotted orange throats, followed by long tan seed pods. May bloom sporadically throughout the year depending on climate and weather. Prefers hot, dry spots and is not particular about soil type as long as it is well-draining. Plant in full sun. Needs only infrequent to no supplemental water once established but does appreciate the occasional deep watering.
