Elon Set To Host Gardner-Webb At The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center

ELON, N.C. – Elon University men's tennis returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 26, when it hosts Gardner-Webb in a 1:30 p.m. matchup at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
GAMEDAY COVERAGE

THE MATCHUP
- Saturday afternoon marks the 10th meeting between Elon and Gardner-Webb.
- The Phoenix is currently leading in the all-time series, 8-1.
- In the most recent meeting between the two programs, Elon defeated Gardner-Webb, 7-0, on Feb. 13, 2021.
- The Phoenix holds a 7-1 mark at home against the Runnin' Bulldogs.

SCOUTING ELON
- Elon enters this contest with an 3-4 overall record after defeating North Carolina A&T, 6-1, in its most recent outing.
Daniel Martin is leading the way for Elon in singles play, as the sophomore has a 3-2 overall record, including a 2-0 mark in the No. 3 slot. Martin has also combined with Chung-Han Tsai to pick up the most doubles wins on the team with four.
- Camilo Ponce, and Chung-Han Tsai are all tied for second on the team in singles victories with three. Ponce holds a team-best three match winning streak, while Tsai has won each of his last two matches.
- Kyle Frankel currently holds a 2-0 mark in No. 2 singles after winning his last two matches against Campbell and North Carolina A&T respectively.
- Nicholas Campbell, Nicholas Condos, Esteban Penagos and Ben Zipay each hold one win this season to round out the singles victories for the Phoenix.
- The combination of Nicholas Campbell and Nicholas Condos has started the year off strong for Elon, posting a 3-1 mark as a duo. The tandem is 3-0 in the No. 3 doubles slot after earning wins against Duke, Liberty and Campbell.
- Ben Zipay and Luke Queiroz are the lone doubles tandem to still be undefeated, as the duo is 1-0 overall and in No. 3 doubles this year.
- Elon returned three All-CAA honorees this season in Kyle Frankel (1st Team; 2nd Team Doubles), Camilo Ponce (2nd Team; 2nd Team Doubles) and Chung-Han Tsai (2nd Team Doubles).
- Elon is led by Michael Leonardwho will begin his 18th season at the helm of the program in 2021-22. Leonard has won conference Coach of the Year honors seven times, including most recently being named CAA Coach of the Year in 2019.
 
SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB
- Gardner-Webb holds a 4-5 overall record after falling to Kennesaw State, 5-2, in its most recent outing.
- Gardner-Webb is led by Mike Griffith who is in his 20th season at the helm of the program. Griffith earned Big South Coach of the Year honors in 2019.
- Alex Lepine is leading the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs on the court, as he holds a team-best 5-2 record in singles play early this season.
- In doubles play, the combination of Connor Enslin and Sebastian Harris hold the top mark, as the duo sits at 4-3, including a 1-0 mark in the No. 1 slot this year.
 
LAST TIME OUT
- Elon won its third consecutive match on Tuesday, Feb. 22, defeating North Carolina A&T, 6-1, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Kyle Frankel led the way for Elon in singles play, defeating Vasil Invanov 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 position.
Camilo Ponce clinched the match for the Phoenix, making quick work of Jorge Perez 6-1, 6-2.
Nicholas Condos outlasted Eder Blanco, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 in a three-set battle on Tuesday.
Esteban Penagos picked up his second singles win of the season, taking down Ethan Baly in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Chung-Han Tsai rounded out the singles wins for the Phoenix, defeating Ian Pederson 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 5 position.
- The combination of Tsai and Daniel Martin clinched the doubles point for Elon, beating Esteban Lopez and Ivanov 6-3 in No. 1 singles.
- Frankel and Ponce got the ball rolling in doubles play, finishing Perez and Blanco 6-1 in the No. 2 slot.
Luke Queiroz and Ben Zipay picked up their first doubles win of the year, outlasting Pederson and Baly 7-6 (8-6) in a tiebreaker.
 
THE FACES OF 2021-22
- The Phoenix welcomes back seven returners from last year's squad in seniors Kyle FrankelCamilo Ponce and Chung-Han Tsai, juniors Nicholas Campbell and Nicholas Condos, and sophomores Luke Queiroz and Ben Zipay.
- Elon will feature three newcomers in freshmen Esteban Penagos and Joseph Dougherty, as well as Minnesota transfer Daniel Martin.
- Penagos joins the Phoenix from Laurel Springs High School, where he earned a top-300 ITF ranking.
- Dougherty comes to Elon from North Carolina Cyber Academy where he garnered a top-200 national ranking (18s) and was considered a 4-Star Player on Tennis Recruiting.
- Martin joins Elon from the University of Minnesota where he posted an 8-8 mark in singles play last season.
 
COMING SOON
- The Phoenix remains at home for a Feb. 26 matchup with Gardner-Webb.
- Elon opens March with back-to-back road contests against Furman (March 5) and Wofford (March 6) respectively.
- The Phoenix will then return to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center to take on Morgan State on March 13.
