How to Make Coffee in a Cafetiere

For many people, coffee is a vital part of their daily routine, especially the first morning cup. But no one wants a bitter, subpar tasting coffee, particularly first thing. Our tips on how to create the best cup of coffee with a cafetiere ensure you can leave poor quality at-home coffee in the past.

What is a Cafetiere?

Invented in 1929, a cafetiere also known as a French press is typically a heatproof jug, often made of glass, with a strainer attached to the lid. It is a brewing device designed to make delicious cups of coffee with ease.

This method is known as one of the best and easiest for creating the perfect cup of coffee, due to the extraction of flavours being arguably much better than other brewing methods. Cafetiere-made coffee is perfect for coffee consumers who enjoy a strong tasting, flavourful experience.

How to Make Cafetiere Coffee

Creating a delicious, smooth coffee using a cafetiere is fairly simple and requires only a few steps to achieve a brew as good as one you would get in your local coffee shop.

  1. Warm up the cafetiere. Rinse your cafetiere with boiling hot water. This allows the temperature of the jug to maintain when brewing, creating the best extraction.
  2. Measure and grind the coffee beans. Measure out 56g of coffee (roughly around 8 tablespoons) and grind it until it forms a breadcrumb-like consistency.
  3. Add the coffee. Once the cafetiere is prepared, remove the hot water that is being used to maintain the temperature of the jug and add the coffee into the empty cafetiere.
  4. Add hot water. Once the coffee is placed in the cafetiere, add boiling hot water and fill it up halfway to saturate the grounds. Be sure to start a count-up timer as soon as you add in the water.
  5. Stir. When the count-up timer reaches 1 minute, use a wooden spoon to break the crust (top layer) and stir.
  6. Add more hot water. Now that the crust has been broken, fill the cafetiere all the way to the top with hot water. Put the lid on and allow it to brew.
  7. Press. Once the count-up timer reaches 4 minutes, slowly and firmly push the press all the way down.
  8. Pour and enjoy. Pour your freshly brewed coffee into a mug of your choice. Ensure you serve your coffee immediately, otherwise the coffee grounds will continue to extract, leading to a bitter tasting coffee, due to the grounds being sat for too long.

What Coffee Grind Type is Best For a Cafetiere?

When using a cafetiere we recommend using coarsely ground coffee. The cafetiere method involves fully submerging the coffee throughout the brewing time, therefore a larger, coarser grind is needed to create the perfect cup of coffee.
