Islanders fans get answer (sorta) on Cory Schneider's absence from Bridgeport

The Bridgeport Islanders are in Charlotte for back-to-back games this weekend. Veteran goalie Cory Schneider wasn't in the lineup on Saturday nor was he there on Sunday. The thought was that perhaps he was called up by the New York Islanders to take on of Sorokin or Varlamov's spots?

The immediate concern was that one of the Islanders Russian goalies may be joining Mathew Barzal on the COVID protocol list and that's why Schneider was possibly being called up. Today we found out that wasn't the case.

New York Islanders: Schneider mystery solved (kind of)

Ilya Sorokin was getting the start for the New York Islanders as they welcomed the Vegas Golden Knights to UBS Arena (the first time Robin Lehner faces his old team). And Semyon Varlamov will back up Sorokin.

So that rules out any call up to the Islanders because of some gap between the pipes. Which is a bit of a relief. The New York Islanders rely on their goalies to bail them out more than they should losing either of their goalies would put them in a tougher situation than they're already in.

This year Schneider has played back up to prospect Jakub Skarek in Bridgeport. In his ten games played he's averaged a 2.289GAA and 0.908SV%. The veteran shot-stopper hasn't been great in net for the B-Isles, but then again it's not like the team in front of him is very good.

The Bridgeport Islanders currently ranks seventh in the AHL's Atlantic Division with a 0.423 points percentage from a 9-13-1-3 record. They've got the third-best offense in the division with 68 goals-for but hold the worst defensive record with 79 goals against.

There's no word from Bridgeport on what's going on with Schneider so now that we know it's not a call up we'll have to wait for official word from them on what's going on exactly.
