Description

Dichorisandra thyrsiflora also known as Blue Ginger is not a true Ginger. It is actually a Commelinaceae, related to the Tradescantia (Spiderwort).
It grows very well in shaded and sheltered areas. I have seen very nice plants growing under quite a bit of shade in rainforest type landscapes. It can also be grown in pots.
In the fall, it will produce bold blue-purple flowers. Some staking may be necessary to keep some stalks upright. Avoid locations with strong winds. If grown in rainforest situations, it can handle temperatures in the mid 20’s F.
