Ferreira Advances To Southern Scuffle Semifinals

Jacob Ferreira shows his emotion following a sudden victory win in The Southern Scuffle quarterfinals

Chattanooga, TN - Jacob Ferreira, seeded fifth and ranked 24th in the nation, went 3-0 on the day to advance to the 184-pound semifinals at The Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear. Ferreira is the only Pride grappler remaining in the championship bracket, though Justin Hoyle (141) and Zachary Knighton-Ward (285) are still alive in the consolation bracket of their respective weight classes.

Ferreira, a senior from Mt. Kisco, New York, began his day with a 10-4 decision over Mitch Hutmacher of Purdue in the round of 32. He followed up with a round of 16 win over Sam Fisher of Virginia Tech by a 7-5 score. Ferreira received a stall point with four seconds remaining to snap a 5-5 tie and then got an escape with two seconds left to account for the final score. Ferreira saved his most exciting win for the quarterfinals when he picked up a 7-5 sudden victory decision over Oklahoma State's Kyle Haas. Trailing 4-3 in the waning seconds of the third period and down riding time, Ferreira scored a reversal to force the extra period and then won with a takedown 49 seconds in to earn a spot in the semifinal round on Monday.

Hoyle went 3-1 on Sunday with a round of 32 win over Andrew Bloemhof of Oklahoma State. No. 25 Darren Miller of Bucknell picked up a 7-3 win over Hoyle in the round of 16, but the Pride senior from Maple Valley, Washington earned a 5-4 victory over Rudy Lopez of Northern Colorado on riding time in the consolation round of 16 #2 and then defeated Vance Vombaur of Minnesota, 4-2, in the round of 8 #1 to advance to Sunday.

Knighton-Ward, seeded fifth and ranked 28th in the nation, suffered a 5-1 loss to North Dakota State's Juan Mora in the round of 32 before scoring a 12-4 major decision over Mason Fiscella of Appalachian State in the consolation round of 16 #2. In the consolation round of 8 #1, the graduate student from Uniondale, New York, posted a 6-3 decision over Jacob Santorio of Appalachian State to move on.
