Award-winning newcomer with an abundance of blooms from March to May. The pea-shaped, dark pink-purple flowers of Cercis chinensis 'Avondale' are followed by wonderfully glossy, heart-shaped foliage which emerges purple then matures to green for colour-shifting animation. An unusual, exciting specimen - seldom seen in the UK and sure to attract positive comments. A relatively slow-growing small tree or shrub which will live happily in a container as well as open ground, making it ideal for smaller gardens. Recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society as an outstanding and reliable performer by their Award of Garden Merit.Cercis chinensis 'Avondale' prefers moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade with a south or west facing aspect and some shelter from strong winds. A hardy, deciduous tree which matures over 10-20 years to reach a height of 4 metres with a spread of 2.5 metres.
