Overview
Summary
Fissistigma species are scandent, scrambling or climbing shrubs. Leaves simple, alternate, exstipulate, with strong parallel veins, pubescent to tomentose. Flowers bisexual, solitary or fascicled panicles or cymes, leaf opposed or axillary, Sepals 3, valvate, base connate, Petals 6 in 2 series, valvate, leathery, thick, pubescent, outer petals flat, trigonous, inner petals smaller. Stamens many, anther cells contiguous, connectives ovoid, apiculate at the top. Carpels many, ovules 2 or more, style oblong, stigma ovoid, short. Ripe carpels berried, globose, stalked, Seeds many.

                    Morphology
                    Leaves 10-18´4-8 cm, elliptic, base rounded, apex obtuse, glabrous above, pubescent beneath; petioles 6-12 mm, pubescent. Flowers solitary or 2-3 together, leaf-opposed, velvety tomentose; pedicels ca 1 cm ; bracts ca 7 mm . Sepals 3, 5-8´5-6 mm, ovate, acute, tomentose outside. Petals 6 (3+3), 18-20´6mm, ovate-lanceolate, acute; inner ones shorter and narrower, glabrous, red. Stamens numerous; Carpels 3mm; style shortly curved. Fruits 2-3cm, globose or subglobose, mucronate, tomentose.

                      A large woody climber. Stem blackish brown, bark fibrous, brownish inside, turning darker on exposure, branchlets tomentose with brownish hairs. Leaves simple, alternate, oblong or oblong-elliptic, 10-20 x 4-8 cm across, base obtuse or rounded, margin entire, apex shallow acuminate, thinly coriaceous, dark green, glabrous except on the midrib above, paler adpressed pubescent beneath, hairs sometimes varying in color from light gray to brownish purple, lateral veins 16-20 on either side of the midrib, slightly arched not loopes, tertiaries veins sub-transverse and subparallel, petiole pubescent, about 0.5-1.3 cm long. Flowers bisexual, solitary or 1-3 together, usually leafopposed, tomentose, about 1.5-2.2 cm across, pedicels slender, tomentose, about 1-1.5 cm long, bracts basal, tomentose outside, about 0.6-0.7 cm long. Sepals 3, ovate, apex acute, brown tomentose outside, about 5-9 x 5-6 mm long. Petals 6 in 2 series, ovate lanceolate, apex acute, tomentose outside, glabrous inside, about 1.8-2 x 0.6 cm across, inner petals shorter and smaller, red. Stamens many, about 2 mm long, connectives globose or ovoid on the top. Carpels many tomentose, about 3 mm long, style curved, stigma bifid. Ripe carpels many, smooth, broadly subglobose or ovoid in fruit, mucronate tip, about 2-3 cm in across, stalk about 1 cm long, Seeds 4-8, dark brown, oval-oblong.
