Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic or irregularly granular, pale grey, usually poorly evident. Apothecia biatorine, 0.3-0.5 mm across, with a black to (rarely) black-brown, strongly convex disc, and a thin to almost absent proper margin. Proper exciple poorly developed, K-; epithecium olive-green, emerald-green or violet, K+ pale greenish grey, usually N+ mauve-purple; hymenium blue-green, olive-grey or colourless, 50-80(-110) µm high; paraphyses strongly coherent, branched and anastomosing, 0.5-1 µm thick, the apical cells 2-2.5 µm wide; hypothecium grey, 50-70 µm high. Asci 100-200(-300)-spored, broadly clavate, thickened in upper part, without a gelatinous outer layer, the wall and well-developed apical dome strongly K/I+ blue. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline globose, (1.5-)2-2.5 µm wide. Pycnidia rare, globose, colourless to brown. Conidia 2.5-3.5 x 1-1.7 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid, with ellipsoid cells. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on hard lignum (e.g. on wooden poles), and on the bark of conifers, rarely of deciduous trees, mostly on the basal parts of old trunks. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Near-threatened” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
