Annual or short lived perennial forb to 40cm tall or sprawling.  Leaves 1-4cm long, 3-15mm wide, flat, mealy, margins toothed to entire.  Flowers tiny (less than 3mm across), male and female flowers on the same plant. Male flowers in small globular groups or very short spikes at the tops of the stems, female flowers solitary or in clusters at the bases of the leaves.  Ssp. conduplicata rare Vic. Ssp. lindleyi poorly known Vic.

In Atriplex lindleyi ssp. lindleyi the fruiting bodies are winged, and the leaves are are longer than wide, and the fruiting bodies are spongy and not flattened.  Description (Volume 1 page 246) and line drawing of fruiting body (Volume 1 page 242 Fig 150S) in Flora of South Australia 4th edition (1986). In the online eFlora of South Australia there is a transcription error.  The online key does not include ssp. lindleyi and there is no description of this subspecies.

In Atriplex lindleyi ssp. conduplicata the leaves are roundish, and the fruiting bodies are flattened, with two broad rounded wings arising from near the base.

In Atriplex lindleyi ssp. inflata the fruiting bodies are almost wingless and almost spherical.
