I bought an unusual plant early this year. At first glance I thought it was Epiphyllum, but on the plain-tag it was written Rhipsalis platycarpa and it had no other information about the plant at all. I love the beautiful shape of the leaves and the red burgundy tint along the edges. At that time I was not so sure it will flower or not, but the beauty of the plant itself was enough to steal money from my purse. Ha… ha…
I tried to get informations about the plant online but only few. Just like epiphyllums, it is an epiphytic cactus and it is also known as ’Mistletoe Cactus’. There are many species of Rhipsalis and all naturally grow in tropical forests around the world. Rhipsalis platycarpa is one species which originally comes from Brazil and Colombia.
Now, the plant is covered with many flower buds that grow on every nodes of the leaves. When open, they will show pale greenish yelow-white little blooms.
I just cannot wait for the flower buds to open, and when they do I will surely post the pictures.

as always your plants bring a lot of joy to my life. i love the colouring on the leaves. it looks a bit like the plant from ‘the little shop of horrors’ which i watched in london many moons ago … it was supposed to have been a scary plant in the stage production but really was quite a fleshy beautiful little number, and i have always wondered about it. i think it was modelled on this plant. look forward to seeing it flower xx

Yes, I can’t wait for the buds to open, but if I’m correct, they won’t be as showy as epiphyllums or zygos.
Ha…. rhipsalis are harmless, eventhough they also call the plants ‘mistletoe cacti’, I don’t really think that they are parasites. For the real horror, you should see Casey’s carnivorous plants : http://carnivorousplants.wordpress.com/
Oh yes about the kalanchoes, I will write about them when they are in flower in spring/summer:)

Just a bit of update about this blog:
Today is September 11-2010, almost 2 months since I’ve taken the photos above. I’ve been waiting for the flower buds to open, they are a bit bigger, but still in buds…. (???)

Viv, I’m sorry… I should have told you that I’ve closed the comments box lately. Yes, I am very busy in Spring….time to repot my bonsai etc and I have no time to read friends’ blogs and to comment. I’ll surely open the comment box again once I’m not so busy anymore:o)
Thank you for your visit and I’m glad that you also enjoy beautiful things in nature.
