- Semi-evergreen shrub/tree, 10-15 ft (3-4.5 m) tall, 8-10 ft (2.5-3 m) wide, irregular shape, gray-green stems, stout spines, 2.5 cm long. Leaves alternate, simple, small, less than 2.5 cm, oval, bright green, sparse, dentate margins. Flowers small, greenish yellow. Fruit 6 mm, round, bright orange color.
- Sun and partial shade. For desert regions, useful as a screen, barrier, or erosion control. Flowers visited by bees and the fruit attracts birds.
- Hardy to USDA Zone 7 Native to southern and western Texas, southern New Mexico, Arizona, and northern Mexico (Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Jalisco, and Michoacán).
