- Deciduous or evergreen shrub up to 6 ft (1.8 m), compact, upright, young shoots scaly and downy. Leaves oval, rounded at the apex, 1.3-4 cm long and 0.5-1.0 cm wide, dark glossy green and slightly scaly above, paler and scaly below. Flowers are bright rosy purple, 2.5-4 cm wide, widely funnel shaped, flat corolla, held above leaf clusters, produced in winter (January-February).
- - 25°F, very early, quality rating 4/3/3 [flower / plant & foliage / performance; scale 1 (poor) - 5 (best)]. One of the earliest rhododendrons to flower. Native to eastern Siberia to the Pacific, and also northeast Mongolia, northeast China, Korea, and Japan. One of the forms of this species (R. dauricum var. sempervirens, syn. R. ledebourii) is a parent of the hybrid rhododendron 'P.J.M.'
