The Split is heading back to our screens for a third and final series, and a first look at Stephen Mangan and Nicola Walker in new episodes has now been revealed.

The upcoming chapter will see Stephen and Nicola reprise their roles of Nathan and Hannah respectively, and a new image of the pair sees Nicola giving an enigmatic smirk as she walks with her former partner.

As fans will remember, the couple have had a rocky time of it and the upcoming series will see them pick up their pieces as their divorce goes through.

Fans were left devastated in series two as Hannah and Nathan’s formerly rock-solid marriage finally fell apart as the depth of Hannah’s betrayal was revealed.

They begin to divide up their 20 years together in the new episodes, but their dream of achieving the ‘good divorce’ is left in tatters – and after an unexpected revelation, it’s all out war.

Meanwhile, Annabel Scholey, Fiona Button, Deborah Findlay and Chukwudi Iwuji also make a comeback in the new episodes, which are set to arrive in 2022, and the other pictures released show them stepping back into their roles.

There’s a prestigious name stepping behind the camera for the first time this year too. Bafta-winning Abi Morgan is set to make her directorial debut with the new series.

Abi has created and written all three series of The Split, as well as working on films such as River, The Hour, Suffragette, Shame, Sex Traffic and The Iron Lady.

On her directorial debut, Abi Morgan said: ‘So much of a writer’s life is solitary that it has been a complete joy to direct and to finally get to work with the brilliant cast and crew and be part of the magic that happens between first read through and final edit that I normally don’t get to see.

‘Terrifying as I have worked with some truly great directors in my time, but it was a pleasure to join The Split directorial team helmed by Dee Koppang O’Leary. Having tried it I hope it won’t be my last time’.

Executive producers Jane Featherstone and Lucy Dyke added: ‘It is the perfect ending to the story that Abi should direct this wonderful show she created and nurtured over three series.

‘For us and for the whole cast it has been a joy and privilege to work alongside her on set and watch her bring her vision to life. We are so thrilled that she decided to take this step in her career with us and make her directorial debut on The Split. It will come as no surprise that she is a naturally gifted director’.

The Split series three is set to arrive next year. The Split series one and two are available on BBC iPlayer to stream now.
