Gibbaeum dispar (N.E.Br.): A rare mesemb with pairs of funky leaves. This small, blue-green species has chunky leaves that repeatedly split to reveal a new pair. The foliage gets a velvety feel from a covering of short hairs. From late winter to early summer, it can bloom with silky pink flowers that open during the day and close at night. It is a relative of the popular Lithops and is also native to open, rocky areas of South Africa. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" pot

Gibbaeum happily tolerate months of drought and will rot quickly if over-watered. The inner leaf pairs get the water they need from older, outer leaves. The soil must be dry enough to allow the outer leaf pair to wither and fall off. Gibbaeum can be challenging plants to grow, but here are some pointers to help you along the way:

• Transplant into pots with drainage holes
• Use gritty, well-draining soil, such as 80% coarse sand, pumice, or perlite and 20% organic matter
• Grow in full sun or on a very sunny window sill
• Water sparingly and only when you notice signs of thirst, e.g. wrinkles and a loss of turgidity
