A unique and characteristic member of the tallgrass prairie with yucca-like foliage and flowers that more closely resemble thistles than the open, airy umbels which are typical of other plants in the carrot family. The greenish white flowers provide nectar for a number of native bees, wasps, butterflies and other insects. They smell faintly of honey.

Deer seem to think this plant is a waste of their time, so it is safe to plant in areas where deer are a problem.
