White crownbeard is probably most famous for its ability to form frost flowers during early freezing weather in autumn. Freezing temperatures force sap through fissures in the lower stem to create ice ribbons. Frostweed is another common name for this plant.

When the weather is nice and warm, however, white crownbeard produces lovely white flowers from late summer through early fall. It grows easily from seed, so removing the seed heads will prevent it from becoming too abundant in more formal settings.
