| An unusual and decorative addition to the front of the border, this variegated form of hawkweed (usually considered a weed!) produces a low rosette of intricately blotched, dark red-brown and blue-green leaves, above which nod small, yellow daisy-like flowers on tall, wiry stems. It is for the foliage that this is usually grown, so although seeds will come true, flowering stems are best removed to keep the plant looking tidy and to prevent self-seeding. | ||||||||||||
| Sowing and/or growing instructions | ||||||||||||
| Sow under glass on the surface of moist compost, covering with a bare sprinkling of compost or fine vermiculite, carefully moving seedlings into small pots or modules when they are large enough to handle. Germination is normally quite rapid, but if this does not occur, a cooling period in the fridge for 3 or 4 weeks is recommended. Plant out when large enough and after last frosts. |
