Melo amphora on brass base
PU929-1
The Diadem Volute , is the common name of this giant sea snail. The Melo amphora can reach 50cm long (49cm for this huge specimen!), so we are close to the record size... and to become this giant shell, it has a carnivorous diet: it feeds upon other shells, including younger melos. This imposing cannibal lives in Australia and around Papua New Guinea, in the clear waters since it remains in the first 10 meters of depth of the coastline. The local fishermen adore it in more than one way: it is edible, and its shell serves as a bailer on the fishing boats. An exceptional size.
