Det. Schneider promoted to lieutenant.

HART – Det. Mark Schneider of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office will be promoted to corrections division lieutenant, replacing Lt. Louis Herremans who is retiring effective May 10, Sheriff Craig Mast has announced.

Lt. Herremans has accepted the police chief position at the Hesperia Police Department. He has been with the sheriff’s office for 29 1⁄2 years. Herremans began his career at the sheriff’s office as a dispatcher when those operations were still conducted there.

Herremans was later promoted to deputy sheriff, sergeant and lieutenant. He has served the office in numerous roles including firearms instructor, defensive tactics instructor, tactical team member and dive team member. He was a long-time college instructor at West Shore Community College in Scottville in the law enforcement program and mentor for countless law enforcement officers.

“Lt. Herremans’ knowledge, wisdom and passion for law enforcement will be missed,” said Mast.

Det. Schneider comes to this position with 22 years of experience in law enforcement. Schneider graduated from Montague High School in 1991 and West Shore Community College in 1997. He has spent 12 years working in the uniform services division, and the last 10 years in the detective bureau.

Schneider was previously a tactical team member for twelve years, a hostage/crisis negotiator, chemical munitions instructor, certified forensic interviewer, and has received special training in: forensic pathology, cyber investigations, cell phone investigations and traffic crash investigations.

Mast said he believes that Lt. Schneider will continue to promote professionalism and integrity within the corrections division.

Mast said he and his staff “wish Lt. Herremans the very best as he starts a new chapter in his career. Lt. Herremans will be a great asset for the citizens of Hesperia, and we know that we will continue to have contact with the new chief!”
