Plants annual or perennial herbs or shrubs. Leaves opposite. Inflorescences terminal, Capitula solitary or in corymbs; heterogramous, radiate; phyllaries in 2-3 series, outerphyllaries sometimes leaflike; receptacles with bracts between the flowers; ray flowers male or sterile; disk flowers 5-lobed; anthers brown or black, their bases obtuse or minutely sagittate, their tips with yellowish or blackish appendages; styles bifurcate, penicillate. Achenes black, flattened; pappuses laciniate cupules, often with few antrorsely barbed spines.
Aspilia includes about 60 species. They are native in tropical America, Africa, and Madagascar.
The Flora ofSomalia reports 3 species for Somalia, one of which, Aspilia mossambicensis, is also present in Somaliland.
