Top 50 Best 3DO Games

Welcome to Retro-Sanctuary's Top 50 Best 3DO games. Now, for anyone new to the site we follow a set of guidelines for all our lists. We aim to represent the best of all genre's, we try to limit the number of sequels, and also tend to avoid games that have been ported from earlier systems that don't use the hardware to its full potential. The greatest import games are allowed, but only when they're import friendly and don't require an FAQ to play.

Thanks and enjoy the list!

Captain Quazar   Captain Quasar 3do
Starting out the list we have Captain Quazar, basically your run of the mill top down shooter but using an isometric view. The graphics are reasonable and the whole thing is presented pretty well throughout. It can admittedly be a little bit unfocused and repetitive on single player, but the 2-player co-op is a really crucial inclusion which helps to alleviate this issue.

Iron Angel of the Apocalypse: The Return   iron soldier 2 return 3do
This sequel to the the original 1994 3DO FPS was a big improvement, with smoother, more varied game play and a higher level of presentation with some nice storytelling FMV cut scenes. There are a few interesting elements for the time, such as the regenerating shield and two gun carry limit, but unfortunately the game takes place in a small window and like many of the less notable fps games of the time the level designs are very maze like and come across as a bit monotonous now. An okay game for its time but probably little more than a curiosity for genre fans now.

Foes of Ali   foes of ali 3do
Reasonable early 3D boxing game from Electronic Arts that has you playing as Muhammad Ali going up against all the most famous opponents of his career. The game had quite impressive graphics when released, with fully 3D models and many camera views, as well as having the boxers show damage as they take hits. A solid release for its day.

Guardian War/Powers Kingdom   powers kingdom 3do
Guardian War is a grid-based JRPG where you control a group of adventurers dispatching enemies, leveling up and buying equipment. The strategy elements and class system are reasonably good for its era and are fun to muck around with, but unfortunately there's very little in the way of plot or characterisations to really draw in the player. An alright game all in all.

Blade Force   Blade Force on 3DO
Good controls, smooth gameplay and big explosions are the order of the day in Blade Force. The game has you searching for mission objectives that need to be destroyed (the green dots on the radar) taking them out and then moving onto the boss, it's as simple as that really. Runs quite impressively, but possibly could've done with a little more game play variety.

D   2 3do
D was one of the only critically liked interactive movie games out there, it worked because deep down its really just a puzzle game that uses the interactive movie style as a vehicle to help to give the game some tension and horror. Truth be told though, in an era where we now have almost movie level in-game graphics setting the scene the cinematic qualities of D have become kind of redundant, leaving a somewhat slow and ponderous experience, but its still interesting to go back and experience the title.

Eye of Typhoon   eye of typhoon 3do
Very rare 2D fighting game only released in Korea. Eye of Typhoon is a solid game that's in the vein of SNK fighters like Fatal Fury and King of Fighters. The game has a varied character roster and reasonably large move set in comparison to the fighter games arriving on the earlier consoles of the time, and also sports some impressive scaling effects and colourful graphics.

Trip'd   trip'd 3do
Trip'd is a Puyo Puyo style game where you match up four of a colour to make them disappear. If you match the colour's in a two by two square you also create aliens which help you/hinder your opponent once you've removed blocks of the same colour. As a one player game Trip'd maybe lacks the pace needed to be really addictive, in multiplayer though this is not the case at all and the game is a heck of a lot of fun.

Crash 'n Burn
crash & burn 3do
Futuristic racing game from Crystal Dynamics that was a launch title and pack-in for the 3DO when it was first released in 1993. Graphically this blew people away at the time and in fact still looked impressive for most of the generation, this was mainly due to it using a trick where the polygon environment was pre-calculated in advance from each position the car could be in at a given time. The trick results in great graphics but unfortunately a slightly cumbersome feel, fortunately the addition of combat, shops and weapon upgrades gives the game play a needed boost.

Super Wing Commander   super wing commander 3do
Enhanced remake of the well-loved PC game from 1990 with vastly improved graphics. Wing Commander is a mission-based spaceship combat game with a focus on storytelling and character interaction. This was an excellent version of the game and on top of adapting the original also includes "The Secret Missions" add-on and a third campaign.
