The mr2. Not the last word in speed. Or handling. But they remain special to me as it was the first sports car I drove. One of the first cars actually.
It was summer 1991, I was 12 ish. We had a family bbq at the local beach, dads (wealthier than us) friend came in his brand new white mr2. He then let me drive it up and down the beach with the t tops off and KWS please don't go blasting out as loud as it would go. I was in literal heaven as the only kid in school with a monthly subscription to both what car and performance car. It seemed so exotic (our family car was a volvo 240. In fact dad still drives it). It left a lasting impression on me and the want never left.
One thing after another I never did manage to buy one, couldn't insure one as a young fella. By the time I could every time I looked they were rotten/badly modified/stupid prices etc.
I saw this one come up in January and was at the guys house within an hour (which didn't help my bargaining power) as I'd seen it advertised back around 2012 but missed it to Hollybrook. Incidentally the same colour scheme of white with black as I drove all those years ago.
1994 rev 3, 53k miles with a full history. Condition is fantastic, no rust to speak of. It had been garaged most of its life until the last year when he used it as a daily putting 10k on. New premium tyres the previous week and a recent clutch too.
Definitely not a case of don't meet your heroes, I put it thru its paces on the way home and it pulls, handles and stops superbly, remarkably in-fact for something 27 years old.
So I decided to set out to make it as good as it could possibly be. First a full service including gearbox oil, timing belt, water pump, ht leads thermostat etc. Then a suspension overhaul including shocks, springs, top mounts and bushes. All done in the excellent hands of Ricks garage.
Booked it in with Ryan at lough neagh autocare next for an underbody clean and rust proof. Check his facebook for the quality of work he does, no wonder he's booking 4 months in advance. He did the underside plus a few extra bits and had it ready to pick up last week.
Not much left to do but wait for some decent weather and stick a few miles on! They're a car never got caught up in the classic car price bubble, maybe some day
