Nothofagus Gunnii

NOTHOFAGUS GUNNII

Tasmania is home to a diverse selection of plants that are unique to this island. Nothofagus gunnii commonly known as Deciduous Beech is the only native deciduous tree growing in Tasmanias’ native forests. The Nothofagus gunnii is a direct link back to the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana. Nothofagus gunnii is the only deciduous native tree in Tasmania and it’s rather rare. While walking in the Mount Field National Park I photograph the Deciduous Beech trees around the lakes and tarns. The mountains turn from green to gold in April creating a brief yet memorable visionary display. Tasmanians identify with this beautiful tree affectionately known as the “fagus”. Our golden tree has found its way into my heart as I draw and paint its golden leaves my memories of walking through a golden world along the Tarn Shelf filter through my inner vision. I cherish our native plants and animals and create artworks to bring attention to the beauty of our islands environmental inheritance worth preserving.
