Campylopus introflexus

English name: Heath star-moss

A distinctive acrocarpous moss that forms dark green to almost black patches that look hoary when dry. When moist, the leaves are straight and erect, but, when dry, they become more adpressed with the hairpoint characteristically reflexed. Capsules are held on a strongly downcurved seta.

Capsules mature from late spring to autumn.

In Scotland, Campylopus introflexus is widespread as a coloniser of bare peat on heath and moorland after disturbance, but it can also be found on rotting logs and fenceposts. BBS distribution map
