Plant Facts
A turf-like plant that can handle light foot traffic and does not need to be mowed- yes please! Dwarf Mondo Grass is a great choice as a very low maintenance plant with a similar appearance to grass. It makes a perfect groundcover, and in mass plantings, it looks like a dark green turf. It tops out at only 4 – 6 inches tall and wide, growing up and out from a center mound. It grows in partial to full shade and in rocky or shallow soil, so it is great planted around tree roots as well. It is rhizomatous, propagating and spreading through its roots, but it spreads slowly. This plant is great as a border or a groundcover, placed in hard to mow places, or used as a low filler in beds and containers. It also looks amazing in a rock garden or between pavers.
Dwarf Mondo Grass, also called dwarf lilyturf or monkey grass, is native to Japan, Taiwan, and China. In late summer and into the fall, this small plant produces white or lavender flowers that are replaced with shiny blue berries in the fall. This plant has no fragrance other than the flowers, which have a faint, sweet scent. The flowers attract bees and butterflies, and the berries attract birds. Although not considered toxic and used in traditional Chinese medicines, the plant causes stomach and GI discomfort and should not be ingested. It can be fed a slow-release fertilizer and trimmed back if needed in early spring to keep the plant healthy and growing. It is an evergreen perennial, so it keeps its dark green foliage all year and lasts up to 10 years.
Dwarf Mondo Grass is fast growing, versatile, and low maintenance. It grows in just about any level of light or soil condition, preferring well-drained, slightly acidic soil and full to partial shade. It grows in zones 6 – 11 and is tolerant of drought, heat, salt, humidity, light foot traffic, and pollution. It also is resistant against deer, rabbits, pests, and diseases. It is an easy-growing plant that grows well just about anywhere in the landscape and spreads to fill its environment. Dwarf Mondo Grass is a perfect turf-like groundcover choice.
