Valerie Pence and the Plant Research Division of CREW at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden will be participating in a restoration project for the endangered Avon Park harebells (Crotalaria avonensis), a Florida endemic legume species. The project, headed by Archbold Biological Station (Lake Placid, FL), will be a collaboration between ABS, CREW, and Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, FL, and will be funded by a grant from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. There are three remaining populations of C. avonensis, only two of which are protected. Tissues from plants at the unprotected site will be collected, propagated through tissue culture at CREW, acclimatized at Bok, and outplanted by ABS on a protected site. Protocols for in vitro propagation of this species were worked out at CREW under a previous grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
