HOW TO FIX THE GAME ON WINDOWS
go to your disciples 2 steam folder it should be something like :
c:\programfiles\valve\steam\steamapps\common\disciples || galleans return
or
c:\programfiles\steam\steamapps\(your account name)\disciples || galleans return

scroll down and you will see a bunch of files and 3 .exe files named :scenedit, discipl2, configeditor.

click on one of the .exe files so that it get's higlighted blue. now right click one of them and click properties, now click the Compatibility tab and go to the Compatibility mode and set it to (windows xp service pack 2). repeat this for the other two exe files.

( remember to left click on the .exe file first, before you right click it for properties . if you don't you might not see the comp tab.)

comment under here if you need help on how to do this or if it worked for you.

enjoy playing , i hope i helped!! If this didn't work try my settings below V
HIGLY RECOMMENDED CONFIG EDITOR SETTINGS
you can go to the configuration editor screen by rightclicking disciples 2 in your steam library and clicking configuration editor.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED SETTINGS

put the screen resolution to : 800x600
- Refresh rate: default
- Delay before an event message pops up: 500 milliseconds

check:
- Stretch to full-screen;
- Compatibility mode;
- Play sounds;
- Play music;
- Display turn counts in paths
- Snap mouse cursor

- Optional 'Use Direct 3D'. Try the game with it unchecked first and if it still doesn't work then check this and try the game again. <-- this worked for many people!!

UNCHECK ALL THE REST!!

NOW SAVE IT and you are good to go enjoy the game.
ONLY READ THIS WHEN THE TWO ABOVE DIDNT WORK
i highly doubt that the above methods won't work for you if you followed them correctly but if you are the small % where it still doesn't work you should instal the software 'fraps' and run it in the background.

now start disciples 2 and it should work. ( i can't explain how tough but it worked for many people)

" Optional 'Use Direct 3D'. "

That's what fixed it for me.

This one worked for me! And I appreciate that I didn't need to download anything from anywhere on my computer.

Well it indeed highly recommended to use DisciplesGL (aka Disciples OpenGL wrapper) in case if you switch to other app (browser) contantly-often during game.
Although not all features of DisciplesGL will work for clear-ASis Steam version (cause of Valve update).

At other hand you can play Disciples II and Disciples II: The Rise of the Elves in windowed mode (so Desktop resolution) without 3rd party wrappers.

-This solved my issue where Disciples kept resizing my browser windows and like, taking over and bugging my other screen, but now, awesomely, I can conveniently play the game!^~^*//.<333 Also I endorse Disciples Wrapper and Rise of The Mod! =D

checking direct 3D solved the choppy/laggy issue for me, just letting people know.

Never mind. I solved the issue with this mod: https://www.moddb.com/games/disciples-ii-dark-prophecy/downloads/disciples-wrapper-v160
Credit goes to the Steam community. Thank you!

Alternatively there is mod-wrapper called DisciplesGL. Widescreen mod.

If Disable Fullscreen optimisation are broken/ridnt work - download Narzoul's Ddraw Compat Wrapper v. 2.0.1 or 3.0.1. Its just dll file to put next to game exe.

Almost all info for all guides here are useless and incorrect. Although they all start from what is really need. And really first step.
never ever use steam desktop links. Use Library directly. There is Config Launcher there. Set UseD3D to 1 and make sure it is saved by launching again. Set 1024x768x60hz (THIS ONE are maximum resolution of 3).

Then go to steam.exe and set Disable Fullscreen resolution for it. Restart Steam and again - always use only Library.

Hello! I followed your guide and while it did work the graphics and my cursor are lagging big time, making the game basically unplayable.
On a side note, I didn't have this problem on my old PC but, like my new one, it was Windows 10 and had worse graphic performance so I don't see how this can be the cause.
