The Cat House Henfield West Sussex

Henfield is a large village in the Horsham District of West Sussex, about 19 km northwest of Brighton and about 66 km south of London. It’s not far from the River Adur and the South Downs and it dates back to at least as far as the Domesday Book of 1086.

With its long history, it’s no surprise that Henfield has some interesting architecture which includes the well-known Cat House. Built in 1550, the Cat House is a Grade II Listed timber-framed building named after the cats on the outside of the building. When the eccentric owner’s pet bird was killed by a local cat (owned by none other than Nathaniel Woodard founder of the famous Woodard schools – Ardingly, Lancing, Hurst) the owner of the house decorated the building with pictures of cats with a canary as a gruesome reminder.

Henfield had an active suffragette movement and in Coopers Way, you’ll find two mosaics in honour of the work they did in the Votes for Women movement. The village church dates back in origin to 770AD and Henfield is also known for its great walking and cycling. The Downs Link (a disused railway that runs from the North Downs to Shoreham) passes through the edge of the village and is now a public bridleway. The South Downs are also within sight offering lots more trails to explore.
