Description Perennial herbs, 40-100cm tall. Rhizome shortened and lignified. Fibril sparse, inflated in hammer shape. Stalk erect, hollow, nodes conspicuous. Leaves alternate, widely lanceolate; 5-20cm long, 1.5-3.5cm wide, apex acuminate, base contracted into panhandle, veins parallel with veinlets, sheath wrapping stalk, margin smooth or slightly ciliate, ligules short and small, hard, ciliate. Panicle acrogenous, branchlets spreading, spikelets narrowly lanceolate, 0.7-1.2cm long, 0.15-0.25cm wide, the lowest flower bisexual, rest neutral, disjointed under glumes; glumes unequal, apex obtuse, veins 5; the first shell 0.6-0.7cm long; sterile lemma enclosed, apex with short awns. Caryopsis dark brown. Flowering: July to September, fruiting: October.
Distribution Growing on hill-slopes, under forests and in dank places. Distributed in Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and etc. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hunan, Hubei and Guangdong. Also produced in Anhui, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Fujian, Henan and etc.
Part Used Medical part: whole plant. Chinese name: Danzhuye.
Harvest & Processing Collected from May to June when flowers not open, cut off fibril, and sun-dried.
Chemistry Mainly contains triterpene compounds, arundoin and amino acid.
Pharmacology Antifebrile and diuretic.
Properties & Actions Sweet, tasteless, cold, non-toxic.Clearing heart fire and dysphoria, and disinhibiting urine.
Indications & Usage Pyreticosis and hydrodipsia, upsets, hot feeling during urination, stranguria with turbid urine, mouth and tongue ulcers, swelling pain in the gums.Oral administration: decocting, 15-25g.
Examples 1. Treat hematuria: pale bamboo leaves, white cogongrass root 3 qian each. Decoct in water and swallow, 1 dose a day.
2. Treat pyretic stranguria: pale bamboo leaves 4 qian, common rush 3 qian, and climbing fern 2 qian. Decoct in water and swallow, 1 dose a day.
