Frodsham st to close

Frodsham St is to close  to all traffic in late June for “public realm improvements” until December. This is the next phase of work associated with the new Chester  bus Interchange which is expected to open in the winter.  The project is funded by the Council and Cheshire & Warrington’s Local Enterprise Partnership who are investing £13.5m from their Local Growth Deal towards both projects.

Frodsham st will be closed to all traffic to allow the work to be completed and the way Frodsham Street traffic is routed through the city will be changed.  To ease the flow of traffic and maintain bus access Foregate st is to be joined to Eastgate st.

In front of the Royal Bank of Scotland, a temporary road surface will be laid in place of the existing paved area. The existing paving will be removed and an asphalt surface laid to allow vehicles to move from Eastgate to Foregate street. Pedestrian access will be maintained either side of the temporary road surface via footways. Sign holders who frequent the area will have to find a new place to stand and the regular stall holders will also need to be relocated.

These advance works are expected to begin on Monday, May 23 and last two weeks.  Traffic will only be able to use the temporary connecting road when Frodsham Street is closed in late June.

Buses will access Foregate st via different routes. From late  June the buses will use Love Street and Eastgate street.  Work will begin shortly to put three bus stops in Love Street and widen the pavement outside Argos in Foregate Street to create more space for bus passengers.

The improvements to Frodsham street, often derided by residents as being full of betting and charity shops are aimed at transforming the street and creating an attractive gateway into the city. Councillor Brian Clarke said that  “while the works are being undertaken the temporary roadway will maintain deliveries for businesses and keep the city moving. The new bus stops and shelters are being installed to provide good facilities for our bus passengers whilst the Frodsham Street Scheme is built.”  He said that all shops, stall holders and bus companies had been informed of the development.
