Ochroma pyramidale, commonly referred to as the balsa tree, is a fast growing tree in the mallow family of Malvaceae. Ochroma pyramidale is evergreen, but can be deciduous during the dry season. Balsa wood is classified as a hardwood, despite it being a relatively soft and lightweight wood. Balsa wood has many applications including, model aircraft, model bridges, whittling, surfboards, break-away movie props, art, and as layers in composite materials. USDA hardiness zones 10 to 12.

Ochroma pyramidale seeds require heat stratification to germinate reliably. Place 4 cups of water in a small pot and place on high heat until boiling vigorously. Turn off the heat and immediately dump the seeds into the boiling water. Once the water has returned to room temperature, the seeds are ready for planting. Plant the seeds ¼ inch deep in a well draining potting soil. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep between 65°F to 75°F for best results. Germination typically takes 5 to 30 days to occur.
